part of the National Poetry Month 2020 series

there's something safe about it like
knowing what you'll have for lunch
when you need to get up tomorrow for work
what you'll do when you get there, that
sort of thing
you get up in the morning
make coffee, drink it, walk
the dogs around the neighborhood, come back
and sit and stare into something, a screen
like a pool of water, for hours
you walk outside as a treat, a break in
routine that keeps everything interesting
the exception that proves the rule
you're using Facebook again, its ligaments
comforting as they rub your muscles together
you're not sure how long this will last
so you take it day by day by unnoticed day
