THIS IS HOW YOU LOSE THE TIME WAR is a far future (and past, and present ... it's a time-traveling book!) novel about, well, a time war. What I really liked about it is the format: it's mostly epistolary, with some action sequences in between to give the reader needed context. The two operatives, known only by their codenames Red and Blue, dance around each other as they do and undo each others' work. The four-dimensional battlefield is richly imagined, as are the two warring factions and their competing world (time?) views.
I'm not sure how much I want to ~ spoil ~ this novel, since I'm one of those people who likes going into a thing with as little knowledge as possible. But since it was published in 2019---and since you can like, read the synopsis on Wikipedia if you want to---I'll mention that the relationship between Red and Blue turns from rivalry to love. They're never really enemies, I think: they're both loners who don't really fit in to their respective sides, and since they both operate at the tops of their respective outfits, I think they feel more a friendly rivalry than animosity, even in the beginning. But as their relationship deepens, it blooms into something really beautiful and, well, timeless.
Since it's a time travel novel, of course the timey wimey stuff has to all fit together like a puzzle. And it does in the most delicious way. All in all, I give this book
